I’m struck by how time seems to speed up. Each year seems to go by faster than the previous one. With so much going on, it is hard to slow down and focus on what matters. Faith, family and friendships. Being aware enough to recognize those around you that need help.
In my Holy Hours reading, I was struck by a line in Psalm 4 about how we spend our time. Here it is:
How long, O people, will you be hard of heart?
Why do you love what is worthless, chase after lies?
Not everyone reads the bible, but this line has sound advice for everyone. It is saying to focus on what really matters in life. Not wealth or whatever feeds your ego but rather, love. The Christian element to add to this is that true love is found by loving God.
I’m an expert at chasing lies. I need to do better. We are surrounded by things to chase every waking moment. And at the fantastic rate of technological advances, we will be able to do even more—and chase even more—things that pull us away from finding that true love.
I don’t think life is going to slow down. I will have to slow it down by peeling away the things I chase. Then I can truly catch what is priceless—love.
Peace.
P.S. The song Chasing Cars from Snow Patrol eerily demonstrates the need to slow down to find love. I’ve listened to this song a thousand times but when listening it, just think of loving God rather than another person. Here’s the video:
