At the end of 2024, I wrote a poem about growing closer to God. My poems are typically formed like song lyrics so when I heard about Riffusion, a new AI powered platform that can generate songs in seconds, I decided to check it out and was shocked at how good it worked. Check out a song of my poem at the top of this post!
It was surprisingly easy to create. I logged into my free account, pasted my lyrics in the “Compose” field and provided a few words of instructions (called “prompts” — basically words like, “piano, slow ballad”). Just from that, Riffusion generates two versions of full songs—with instruments and vocals—in less than 30 seconds. If you don’t have your own lyrics, it will generate those for you as well based on additional prompts.
Keep in mind that I have zero skills in creating actual songs. For those with actual music talent, there are major limitations on tweaking songs to your likings. You can generate new versions by adjusting some sliders and revising your prompts. In a few minutes you’ll have 20 versions of your song but none of them typically sounds just the way you want.
I’ll state the obvious—this in no way will replace actual singers and professional song writers. I don’t know how useful they will find AI platforms like Riffusion. I imagine a paid version will come that does allow more control, maybe even geared towards professionals.
Who owns the song I created—I have no idea. I own the copyright to the lyrics (since I wrote them) according to the Copyright Office ruling last week (check that out here). They essentially reinforced their 1965 ruling that whatever input is provided by a human, is owned by that human. So in my case, I own the lyrics but the song is not owned by me. I guess it’s not owned by anyone. Or perhaps it is owned by the AI Overlord who will emerge soon enough.
